Statement by Bishop John Buckley on the publication of the Ryan Report

We are all very saddened by the revelations that have emerged as a result ofthe Inquiry just published.  We must do our best to ensure that this never happens again.  The report of that Inquiry has revealed a story of intense suffering at the hands of some members of staff in whom great trust had been placed.  The people who have been hurt must be foremost in everyone's mind when we read the report. I am deeply sorry that that trust has been breached in this way.  We must never again be complacent about child protection.  Our sympathy goes out to them and I ask for prayers that they will continue on the road to healing. We are making every effort to ensure that the Diocese becomes a safe placefor all our children. In recent years, a Child Protection Committee has been set up in thisDiocese.  It has worked extremely hard to put together a booklet entitled 'Diocesan Guidelines for Good Practice by all who work with Children andYoung People in the Catholic Community'.  This booklet lays out a Diocesan Policy and procedures which seek to ensure that children and young people who are involved in Church-related activities are respected and safeguarded at all times. It was launched publicly in May 2008.  It is currently being revised in line with the recently published 'Safeguarding Children: Standards and Guidance Document' from the National Board for Safeguarding Children.

The Child Protection Committee has also promoted the training of Parish Child Protection Representatives in every Parish in this Diocese.  Eight training weekends have been held around the Diocese, bringing the number of Parish Representatives now trained to 150.  Their role is to raise awareness of Child Protection Policy at Parish level and to ensure that the procedures that flow from this policy are implemented in every Parish. We are committed to doing all we can to assist people in accessing appropriate counselling and pastoral help.  I want to assure people that it is always my wish to respond urgently to complaints when they come to myattention and to do all I can to help the people concerned.
