Bicentenary of St Michael’s Church

October 17, 2008

Ballinvriskig, Upper Glanmire

A special Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated on Saturday, 11th October 2008, with Bishop John Buckley as Principal Celebrant. A packed church heard him praise those who built this and churches like it in times of poverty in Ireland. He challenged the congregation to take seriously our commitment to the church of the future. An inspiring homily was delivered by Canon Kerry Murphy O’Connor, PP Turner’s Cross, which is available on this site. The Church looked splendid in its new colours, festooned with some beautiful floral displays, the work of the Upper Glanmire flower group. After the Mass, all were invited to the Community Centre where refreshements were served by the local ICA and Bicentenary Committee. Overall, the mood of the evening was one of joyful celebration.

The final event of the bicentenary year is the Festival of Faith in St Michael’s from Monday, 24th November to Wednesday, 26th. It will be led by the Redemptorist Fathers, who will give special attention to the school and the young parents of the area.
