This picture illustrates how the new ceiling transforms the Church interior. The rectangular recesses are known as “coffers”. A “coffer” is an ornamental sunken panel, and in ancient architecture was used to save weight on domed ceilings. In the Glanmire Church renovation, each coffer has uniform square patterns and in each of these larger squares are nine smaller […]
One of the key architectural features of the renovated St Joseph’s is the ceiling consisting of coffers with uplighting. This innovation was undertaken so as to match the classical architectural features of the outside of the church, something that had been lacking in the interior. Share post Follow us
