May Procession

April 23, 2011

The annual procession to the Marian Shrine in Glanmire takes place on Sunday, 1st May. It departs from the steps of St Joseph’s Church at 3.00 pm and processes to the Grotto where an address will be given by the Bishop of Killaloe, Bishop Kieran O’Reilly. A Corkman, Bishop Kieran was born in Turner’s Cross and educated at Scoil Chriost Ri and Colaiste Chriost Ri before joining the Society of African Missions in Wilton in 1970. He went on to study at Maynooth College and was ordained priest in 1978. After ordination he spent two years working in the Archdiocese of Monrovia, Africa. He was recalled to Rome to undertake postgraduate studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute from which he graduated four years later with a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (LSS). He then went back to Africa and taught Scripture at the seminary in Ibadan, Nigeria. He was elected Superior General of the Society of African Missions in 2001, a post which he held until his ordination as Bishop of Killaloe in August of last year. We are delighted to have one of our own who has been such a wonderful missionary and is now in a key leadership position in the Irish Church. He can be assured of a warm Glanmire welcome.
