Glanmire Catholic Parish Diary Oct/Nov 2013

A big thank you to Natalie Hyde (Faith Development officer with Redemptorist Youth Group Scala) for an informative talk Tues 15th Oct on the topic “Has Catholicism a place in Modern Youth Culture?” Natalie, spoke of the value of honesty and example, of providing a safe and trusting environment for discussion, of praise, encouragement and fun. Young people like to mix with their peers and have deep and meaningful discussions on faith. Young people are full of idealism, enthusiasm and energy end benefit from encouragement and praise and the space to find their place in life.

Carol Dorgan held our attention Tues 8th Oct by speaking about living our Christianity – bringing good news to the poor, freedom to prisoners and sight to the blind. The need for justice in our society and our world. For example when we vote do we choose candidates that will improve our own lot or candidates who have the good of the whole society in mind. Do we know how the good we buy are produced? etc.

Thank you to Dr. Fiachra Long for a presentation on academy/schools and Catholic ethos Tues 1 Oct. Fiachra reminded us that our schools are a place for an integrated education – and this includes our Catholic living. Catholic schools are also a place where we are free to live and express our beliefs. To be Catholic is to be forgiving – just as the early church forgave those who succumbed to the Roman Emperors demands to deny their faith. Fiachra mentioned the challenge to to continue with integrated education as our children embrace the digital/online age.

We were all delighted with the inspiring and thought provoking talk from Pádraig Corkery Tues 24 Sept. Pádraig underlined that Catholics are part of the world, involved in the world and try to transform to a loving/caring society and lead the world to salvation – religion is not apart from the world. Governments, democracies and politics are encouraged in so far as they uphold the common good including safety, freedom, justice … – including religious and moral freedom for all. The responsible use of freedom.

Alice Taylor gave a challenging and reflective talk on Tues, 17th Sep. Alice spoke of finding God in nature – in the ploughing of a field, in talking water from a well, in walking the fields, in gardening – places and activities of solitude.
