St. Michael’s Church with Bicentenary Tree in Foreground
October 31, 2010
St Michael’s Church dates from 1808 and is built on the site of a penal Mass house. The bicentenary was celebrated in 2008 with a number of functions to mark the historic occasion: Mass celebrated by Bishop John Buckley, the preacher being Archdeacon Kerry Murphy-O’Connor; two broadcast radio Masses; the redecoration of the church; a mission, which was preached by the Redemptorist Fathers; Mass in Templeisque cemetery; Mass at Coolgreen Mass Rock on 15th August, 2008; a tour of the area led by John O’Callaghan who provided interesting historical information. The local ICA branch planted a number of trees to commemorate the foundation of the Church and one of them is seen here in this photograph.
